PHOTOGRAPHS ARE MESSAGES TO THE SOUL

I was born and raised in KwaZulu Natal – in a small village called Gcilima.
The stories I tell through photography stem from here and my current worldview. I am an artist, writer and storyteller. Photography enables me to bridge the gap between my thoughts and things I can ‘see’.

My first camera was a Nikon D3200 – it took me two years to save up for it ergo it holds great sentimental value. When photographing, my goal is to create images that make you wonder which world I come from because they are umhlaba wakwa mhlaba (a world within worlds)
My photography style is very contrasty, revolves around portraiture, playing with colour and repetition. The first series was titled Innocent, a journey that has led me to my new series titled Mthunzi Wesithunzi IV: Healing. The stories I tell are authentic and true to who I am and my experiences. I am able to speak about my past, reflect on the present and look into the future because photographs are messages to the soul.
